Ben Barnes grew up in Pittsburgh and made his start as a cartoonist and illustrator before turning to film. As a writer and director, Ben has enjoyed a wide variety of celebrated work in Los Angeles. He’s worked for Steve Carell’s production company, Carousel Television, directing and writing scripted comedy. Entries in his short film series Fish In A Sweater have been official selections of the Jim Henson Foundation’s Puppets on Film Festival, the New York Television Festival, Just For Laughs Montreal and Chicago, and multiple years at South by Southwest. A feature version of Fish recently won Best Feature Screenplay at the LA Comedy Festival. His most recent directing work, a narrative music video for the band Auditorium, was chosen to premiere at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
As an illustrator, Ben just completed a month-long instagram art residency for internet radio mainstay Dublab, tracing his life through daily illustrated memories of music. He’s done poster work for musicians Car Seat Headrest and Guided By Voices and illustrated actor Jeffrey Tambor’s memoirs for Crown Publishing.
Lastly, Ben co-produced and edited the documentary feature Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America, a 2016 SXSW Jury Award winner that aired on PBS’s Independent Lens. He is currently working in the same capacity on This Is Not Normal featuring David Frum, Dan Rather, Anne Applebaum and Fareed Zakaria, among others.
