Legacy Effects

Role

Director, Editor, Videographer

Synopsis

Legacy Effects is one of the preeminent names in practical special effects. I was tasked with showcasing their work to the world.

I documented the work of hundreds of artists and craftspeople as they created creatures, suits and props for major motion pictures such as Jurassic World, Robocop, and Terminator: Genisys. For over three years, I coordinated with with their staff photographers and videographers to capture the processes discreetly, interviewed key personnel and delivered content both for public consumption and private studio review (Hearing positive feedback from Steven Spielberg was one of many unexpected perks of the job).

Aside from documentary work, I also wrote, directed and edited commercials, proofs of concept and other narrative presentations.

Making The Terminator

With 18 million views and counting, this behind-the-scenes look at Terminator: Genisys instantly became Legacy Effects' most high-profile calling card. It originally premiered at Comic Con and has been shared, meme'd and gif'ed all over the world.

Building The Apatosaurus

The process of building an old-school animatronic dinosaur was fascinating to watch in person; getting to direct and edit the making-of was a dream come true. Not only did the experience provide a window into the stunning animatronic work many on the team had done for the original Jurassic Park, it also showed how humblingly complex the whole process is.

Legacy Effects: Comic Con Commercial

Legacy approached me to write and direct a mock commercial to premiere at Comic Con. I got to take my pick from the wide range of suits, gadgets, creatures and props they had created and put together a fun industry video starring many of the actual artists and technicians that made them.
